The contemporary world continues to suffer from a number of social problems that are global in scope but impact the Global South disproportionately. While broad and coordinated policy responses to overcome these problems exist, such policies are not shaped solely by the political will to address the problems. Washington DC is rarely mentioned in the scientific literature on world cities. However, its influence on the world economy is obvious (World Bank, IMF, Federal Reserve). As a new immigration center, Washington has grown rapidly into an international city. It is suggested that the concept of global city must be re-examined to propose a more flexible definition.
